Flotation therapy or sensory deprivation therapy provides a variety of physical and mental benefits. People have been practicing flotation therapy for generations in places like the Dead Sea. Flotation therapy provides such benefits as the following:
- Relieving pain
- Reducing stress, anxiety, and depression
- Increasing circulation
- Improving sleep and reducing insomnia
- Boosting the immune system
- Increasing concentration and alertness
The float pods are filled with warm water that has been diluted with Epsom salt in order to provide maximum buoyancy. This way the patient can completely relax without worrying about keeping themselves afloat; the salt does it for them. The temperature of the water along with the salt content works to relieve tension in the muscles as well. The pod is also completely dark and silence, which allows for total relaxation that some patients have described as better than a full night’s sleep.
The First Session
The client will need to use the restroom, take off their jewelry, and wash off deodorants, cosmetics, perfumes, colognes, lotions, and hair products. They should also turn off their cell phone. The client should not wear a swimsuit in the float spa, for the salty water will make it uncomfortable. It is best to go in the floatspa naked.
While the actual floatation session lasts an hour, the spa schedules two hours for every client. The staff uses that time to educate new patients and ensure a calm and peaceful ambience. One way to do so is to avoid rushing. After finishing a float, the client may then enjoy themselves in the spa’s lounge.
How to Prepare
Clients will have a better experience if they avoid doing certain things before their session. For example, they should not treat or color their hair for at least 48 hours before their float. They should not shave for at least six hours before their session, and they should not drink caffeine or eat a big meal two hours before their float.
Candidates for Flotation Therapy
The ideal candidate for flotation therapy will be somebody in overall good health. People with the following conditions are not accepted as candidates for flotation therapy:
- Open wounds
- Under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Contagious respiratory or skin conditions
- Serious mental disorders
