A full smile can make you look friendlier and more approachable. When your smile is dulled by thin and lifeless lips, you may wonder what measures you can take to make them look fuller. Rather than rely on cosmetics like liner and lipstick, you can get a fuller smile by undergoing lip augmentation with dermal fillers.
What is Lip Augmentation?
Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that augments or changes the width, shape and volume of your lips. It involves the use of dermal fillers that are injected into your lips as well as the corners of your mouth.
Lip augmentation is minimally invasive and safe for patients who are in good overall health. This procedure is performed right here in our office on an outpatient basis. It only takes between 15 to 30 minutes to complete in most cases and requires very little, if any, recovery time before you can go back to your normal routine.
What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable substances that are typically made of hyaluronic acid and are injected directly into the top layer of the skin. While collagen used to be to the standard substance for lip augmentation, it is used less frequently now.
Most cosmetic physicians today use hyaluronic acid because it is produced naturally by the human body and thus stands less of a chance of being rejected or causing complications.
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers increase the volume of the lips as well as the shape and width of the mouth. The effects of these injections can last for up to three months before the patient must undergo touch ups to regain the desired volume.
Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are available under a variety of brand names today. At our center, we offer the following fillers:
• Restylane Silk®
• Juvederm® Volbella
• Belotero® Balance
Before the procedure begins, our provider will clean your lips and around your mouth with an antiseptic. If desired, we will then apply a topical numbing agent to minimize your discomfort before injecting the dermal fillers.
After the procedure is finished, we will once again clean the treated area to eliminate the risk of infection and stop any bleeding. You will remain under observation for a brief time to ensure that you do not suffer an allergic reaction to the fillers.
It is important that you avoid direct sunlight while you are healing. If you must go outside, you should wear a high SPF sunblock.
