Sclerotherapy is a proven method for removing unsightly spider veins and varicose veins. These patchy blood vessels can be caused from old injuries, poor fibrous support tissue or damaged blood vessel cells that reproduce in an inordinate fashion. Unless they are part of a larger, more complex medical condition, varicose and spider veins are non-threatening.
However, many adults are self-conscious about the appearance of these unwanted blood vessels because the reddish and sometimes bluish patches draw attention when the legs are exposed. We highly recommend sclerotherapy because it effectively eliminates the involved veins without harming the adjacent tissues.
What Sclerotherapy Involves
Sclerotherapy is performed by injecting a saline solution directly into the involved vein. The interior lining of the blood vessel wall begins to swell. The vein swelling causes constriction, and the blood eventually coagulates.
The body responds by sending scavenger cells and antibodies to the affected area. The blood vessel eventually breaks down, and the material is absorbed by the body and flushed with other waste. The main vein continues to operate normally, but the spider veins are gone for good.
Who is the Ideal Candidate?
When our clients come in for a consultation, we look at the medical history to determine whether the varicose or spider veins are caused by some other medical condition. It this isn’t the case, then we will recommend sclerotherapy.
The procedure works regardless of skin type because the problem exists in the tissue beneath the skin. So long as the individual is in good health and is not dependent on blood thinners, he or she should have no trouble undergoing sclerotherapy.
How Sclerotherapy is Performed
Aspirin and pain medications should be avoided for several days prior to treatment. The area to be treated should not be covered with any sort of ointment or moisturizer on the day of the procedure. During the procedure, the saline solution is injected, and the vein begins to swell almost immediately.
Depending on the number of veins to be treated, the procedure may last as long as 30 minutes. After the treatment is complete, the client can resume normal activities at once. However, strenuous aerobic exercise should be avoided for several days.
What to Expect
The vein begins to break down rather quickly, but visual improvement may not be seen for up to a month. We may recommend that support hosiery be worn for a week or to, as this acts as a compress for the treated area. Direct exposure to sunlight should also be avoided for a week or more.
